The new Cape Verdean minister of maritime economy, Paulo Veiga, on Friday said, after taking office, that the government will launch the international public tender for the concession of the country’s ports during the first half of the year.

In August 2017, the current Cape Verdean government, supported by the Movement for Democracy (MpD), announced the cancellation of the international public tender for the sub-concession of the country’s main ports, explaining that the previous model did not meet the requirements of the new strategic vision defined for the sector.

The French multinational Boloré had won the tender for the port concession under the previous government of the African Party for the Independence of Cabo Verde (PAICV).

As for priorities, Paulo Veiga outlined the implementation of inter-island maritime transport, making the system work, but also monitoring and accelerating the infrastructure being built, especially the Maio Port, the implementation of the Sea Institute on the island of São Vicente.

For Paulo Veiga, the fact that there are now two ministers for each of the ministries will facilitate and speed up the implementation of policies for the sector.

With a minister of the maritime economy, the government of Cabo Verde no longer has a secretary of state for this portfolio, the minister said.
