The EU Ambassador participates in the official launch of the Solidarity and Community Tourism Project in Ilha do Maio, which will take place today, January 16, at 4 pm, at the Noble Isaac Pinheiro Hall, in the City Hall of the Municipality of Maio, and also attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment of Cape Verde, Gilberto Silva, and the Mayor of Maio, Miguel Silva Rosa.

The project, to be implemented by 2020, was funded under the latest EU civil society support call to promote sustainable tourism, boost income generation and improve the socio-economic conditions of beneficiary communities on various islands and vulnerable urban areas of the country. This project has EU funding of 48 million Cape Verdean escudos. The project is implemented by the Marquês de Valle Flôr Institute (IMVF), the Maio City Council and the Loures City Council, Portugal, and is associated with the Tourism Development Society of the Islands of Boa Vista and Maio and the City Council of Good view.

This project consolidates the results already obtained by previous EU-funded interventions in the island of Maio to preserve and promote the natural and cultural wealth of the island and its people for sustainable and inclusive tourism that can generate employment opportunities and improve conditions. of the island population. This intervention will benefit Maio Island families and local associations, farmers and ranchers, fishermen and local producers, with a special focus on young people; as well as the tourists and visitors of this island.
