Covid Precautions for Travel to Cape Verde and Other Islands

The Prime Minister guaranteed that the trips will be resumed with extra precautions of sanitary control. He reinforced, “A number of measures were approved in good time: mandatory use of masks, temperature measurement, hygiene and health surveillance form. Ports and airports, air and sea carriers, are subject to strict health security measures”.

“Considering the situation of the islands of Santiago and Sal, currently with high community transmission, an additional measure of rapid test requirements is introduced. A person who travels from Santiago or Sal to other islands, must present, at check in , a COVID 19 screening test with a negative result, carried out in the 72 hours before the trip ”, announced today the Prime Minister in a statement to the country , within the scope of the deconfiguration plan, in which from July 15, inter-island air travel and maritime connections between all islands for passenger transport are resumed.

Ulisses Correia e Silva justifies the measure because “of the evolution of the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Air Transport Association, the European Aviation Safety Agency and the International Maritime Organization (IMO)”. And to meet demand, conditions are created for tests to be carried out in all health stations on these two islands, avoiding the movement of people to a single center. Also, private laboratories, certified by the Independent Health Regulatory Authority, through a protocol defined by the Ministry of Health and Social Security, will be able to carry out tests, thus creating more alternatives for offering this service to users.

The Prime Minister guaranteed that the trips will be resumed with extra precautions of sanitary control. “A number of measures were approved in good time: mandatory use of masks, temperature measurement, hygiene and health surveillance form. Ports and airports, air and sea carriers, are subject to strict health security measures ”he reinforced.

Regarding the resumption of international passenger flights, he said that “at the right moment” the date and conditions for their realization will be defined.

The Head of Government also reinforced that a set of measures were adopted to monitor the lack of definition and reduce risks, such as mandatory use of masks in services and public service spaces; creation of hygiene conditions; mandatory physical distance rules applicable to certain establishments and activities; and restrictions in certain spaces and activities prone to gathering people. Associated with all this, rapid tests were massified; as well as epidemiological surveys are ongoing on all islands.

More: investments were reinforced to increase the country’s capacity to perform PCR tests, with a new laboratory in Praia and laboratories in S. Vicente and Sal. In Fogo it will be installed soon.

According to Ulisses Correia e Silva, more than 90,000 masks are made available free of charge to the poorest people through the Ministry of Family and Social Inclusion, among other measures that will only be insufficient if they are “accompanied by people’s responsibility in the face of the seriousness of the epidemic of COVID-19″.

“There is no lack of knowledge on the part of people about the effects of the virus on health. There is a belief that more serious situations only happen to others, ”he said, adding that it is necessary for people to collaborate with the protection of their own health and the health of others and for the relaunch of the country’s economy.

“The continued growth of positive cases of COVID 19, particularly in Praia and Sal, jeopardizes the country’s economy, hinders the opening of international flights and the movement of people abroad”, insisted the Prime Minister, asking everyone to “give it their all” to lower the virus transmission levels.
